Frequently Asked Questions

  • The short answer is: generally, yes. Alabama is one of the few remaining states that requires a referral for physical therapy. A referral can be provided by a physician, chiropractor, dentist, nurse practitioner, or a physician’s assistant. (As a side note, you can help advocate for direct access by contacting your representatives!)

However, you do not need a referral for wellness visits, and you can come see me for a screening before you get a referral. Confused? Call me!

  • We’ll discuss your concerns, symptoms, medical history, and goals. We’ll also do a physical exam, which typically includes an assessment of posture, pelvic alignment, functional movement, strength, and soft tissue and joint mobility. If appropriate and with your consent, an internal assessment of your pelvic floor will be performed. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and address any concerns. Collectively, we'll develop a plan that you can sustainably incorporate into your daily life for long-term results.

  • Whatever makes you comfortable! Generally, clothing that’s easy to move around in works best. If you are coming to see me for hip or knee pain, loose-fitting shorts are best.

  • Everyone has a pelvis! Therefore, everyone can experience pelvic floor dysfunction. Although it is not discussed as frequently, men can develop pelvic floor dysfunction as a result of trauma, neurologic diseases, surgery, infections, or enlarged prostates.

  • Sure can! This is 100% patient choice. I can educate your partner on as much or as little as you request.

  • There are options. If we are working on an issue that requires internal work, we can reschedule the entire session, postpone the internal portion of the session (there are always plenty of things to work on), or we can proceed as usual if you are comfortable.
